Operational Medicine Mark II Thumbdrive

Support

Background

If the Mark II were a CD or DVD, as soon as you put it in your computer, it will start playing (so long as "autorun" is enabled on your computer).

But because it is a thumbdrive, computers with Windows® operating systems usually will not allow it to automatically start running. "Autorun" features from a thumbdrive are considered a security vulnerability and while there are several ways to thwart your computer's built-in protections against this, we believe it is better to leave these protections intact.

Instead, we'll talk you through the simple technique of opening the main page on the Mark II. After it is open, you can easily navigate as though you were on the internet.

FAQs

Why won't the Mark II run automatically when I plug it into the computer?

  • Because of the security settings on Windows operating systems, USB peripherals (including thumbdrives, printers, etc.) are not allowed to automatically run programs or open files. This is considered a security vulnerability that bad guys can exploit.

Aren't there ways of getting around this so I don't have to deal with files and file folders?

  • Yes, but they don't work on many computers, and Microsoft has been aggressively patching the weaknesses that allow us to sometimes get around these safeguards.

Can't you just put a shortcut that I can download that will point directly to the main page file?

  • No. The problem with shortcuts is that they must correctly identify the drive letter (A through Z) that is assigned to the USB thumbdrive. Unfortunately, each computer assigns these drive letters in a different way, so that what is assigned to "L" on my computer might be assigned "H" on another computer.

I don't have a pdf reader on my computer. Some of the files on the Mark II require a pdf reader. Where can I get one?

  • PDF readers are freely available from Adobe. You can download it here.
